Game show host/comedian and germ phobic Howie Mandel is selling his Cape Cod-inspired home for a cool $7.25 million. Even though the records show he purchased the property in 2006 for $3 million, he tore down the existing home (too many germs?) and replaced it with a 5,936-square foot home designed by Douglas Burdge containing 5 bedrooms and 5 and a half baths.
A large detached guest/pool house also on the property has another bedroom and 1 and a half baths. With the elongated pool extending in front of the guest house, it looks like a miniature Nantucket style Taj Mahal.
Clean and airy is the best description of the interior of this home. The design leaves no room crowded or closed in. The décor is interestingly pristinely white with accent colors and wood floors making the room come alive and less antiseptic. What else would you expect for a germ-a-phobe who had the house custom designed? Luckily, it doesn’t smack of sterile or “rental unit” with all the white but gives the Malibu beach feel to the Nantucket exterior.
Even the outside has a clean, pristine appearance with a sandy tan exterior accented in white and clean lines everywhere. The stone chimneys are also in light toned natural stone to add to the clean appearance. It contains a massive natural stone fireplace, a spa, a built-in barbecue center and fire pit in addition to the pool, landscaping and a view of the distant mountains behind the Santa Monica Bay.
Both the family room and living room contain a fireplace and have a delightful view of the ocean and pristine lawn. For the living room, you have to look past the open aired breakfast area to see the view, but it isn’t impeded by the empty room and quite dramatic. The open railed second floor adds to the concept of freedom and gives the already spacious lower levels even more space and depth.
Despite his celebrity persona, Howie Mandell wasn’t clowning around when he approved the design on this magnificent Malibu property. It is well designed, tasteful and would be a pleasure for any family to own.
