Oprah Winfrey Lists New York City Penthouse For $7.9 Million

[one_fourth]Price: $7,900,000[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Size: 2,530 sq ft[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Bedrooms: 3[/one_fourth]

By far one of the most popular women in the United States is the beloved Oprah Winfrey. Coming from a humble Mississippi upbringing, Oprah has made a huge impact on the country with her philanthropic efforts and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Now, Oprah has her own network (OWN), which covers everything from stories of betrayal to moments of inspiration.

Over the years, Oprah has definitely been in the spotlight, especially for her charitable donations. Today is no different than the many years before. However, not only is the news currently surrounding her partnership with Lady Gaga in an initiative to stop bullying, but also the Place 57 penthouse that she is connected to has officially hit the market.

Place 57 Background

Although there is not absolute certainty that Oprah Winfrey is the owner of the penthouse, there is definitely a strong suspicion that absolutely leads many to believe this is the case. In 2008 Gayle King, a good friend of Oprah and CBS This Morning co-anchor, purchased the Midtown Manhattan penthouse better known as Place 57 when she paid out $7.1 million for the property.
However, when taking a closer look at the details, both Gideon Kaufman (attorney) and Lisa Gardina (account) are on the documents, two individuals that work very closely with Oprah Winfrey. Although this could be merely a coincidence (or a decision Ms. King made based upon strong recommendations from Oprah), a closer look reveals that it is unlikely as the property records also refer to SOPHIE’S PENTHOUSE LLC, which is rumored to be a trust that Winfrey set up and named after cocker spaniel, Sophie, that is deceased.

Place 57 Lands Back on the Market

Now, Place 57 has been placed back on the market with an asking price of $0.8 million more than was purchased for in 2008. The penthouse is on the 36th floor of the Midtown Manhattan tower and includes 2,530 square-feet boasting 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. For $7.9 million, this “Oprah Winfrey property” could be yours.
The glass penthouse also includes a beautiful terrace of 750 square-feet, overlooking breathtaking views of the city. The home is clearly meant for someone living the lifestyle of the rich and famous, with nearly $5,000 in charges and taxes per month. However, what do you expect when you receive access to an all-inclusive fitness center, conference rooms, garden, and nonstop doorman and concierge services?

If you love Oprah Winfrey and have $7.9 sitting around then Place 57 penthouse may be the perfect new home for you.

Sally Field Buys New York City Apartment

[one_fourth]Price: $2,550,000[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Size: 1,200 sq ft[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Bedrooms: 2[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth_last]Bathrooms: 2[/one_fourth_last]

It seems Sally Field downsized. Of course, that may or may not be true. A “Sally Field” purchased a $2.55 million dollar co-operative apartment at 2 Horatio Street in late October, just months after she sold her Malibu estate for $5.65 million. The girl has to live somewhere and it seems as though she decided on a new, smaller, but none-the-less-attractive, home in the Big Apple. You’ll be sorry Miss Sally when the snow starts to fall.

The two-bedroom, two-bath apartment comes with a hefty monthly maintenance fee totaling $29,112 a year. If she just makes a 1 percent return on the money left from the Malibu sale, she can use the interest on the funds to write the monthly check. Like many baby boomers, she probably loved the beautiful view, horse stables, expansive house and pool of the Malibu property, but simply was tired of the upkeep and shoveling horsey poo each morning. Of all the stars, it would be easy to envision this down-to-earth Forest Gump mama doing that, but I’m wagering she had help.

The new quarters, a 1931 Bing Brothers building, comes with all the amenities you’d expect from a posh New York apartment co-op. It has a full-time doorman, bike rooms, laundry service and even allows pets. The master bedroom has its own wood burning fireplace, a bathroom and two closets, on of which is a walk-in. The other bedroom, a tad bit smaller, doesn’t have the luxury of the fireplace, but does have all the closet space and its own bathroom.

Nestled between the two bedrooms is the living room/dining room combo that also offers a wood burning fireplace. You walk into a long entry way with a coat closet. To the left is the door to the master bedroom, then the open space of the living/dining area. To the right you have the perfectly sized kitchen for those of us who prefer take-out but occasionally want a homemade salad or steamed veggies. It opens to the dining area with a long counter half topped with butcher block and the other half with marble.

There’s a beautiful view of New York from every window and even though there’s less space, there’s less maintenance. While there is no large lawn and greenery, the breathtaking view doesn’t require mowing. The only true negative will occur when the chilly, snowy winds of the New York winter start howling at those windows. Ms. Field may rethink the relocation, if it is the “Brothers and Sisters” Ms. Field everyone loves.

Susan Sarandon Buys New York City Home

[one_fourth]Price: $1,750,000[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Size: 820 sq ft[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Bedrooms: 1[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth_last]Bathrooms: 1[/one_fourth_last]

[box] It’s never a surprise when a couple breaks up, when one buys the other out of their abode. That’s exactly what Susan Sarandon did when she and 23-year life partner, Tim Robbins called it quits.[/box]

According to reports, Sarandon forked over a cool $3.2 mil to keep the family home that occupies all of the eighth and one-half of the seventh floors at 147 W. 15th Street, which they’ve owned since 1991. However, buying real estate for Sarandon was what eating potato chips are for other people. She couldn’t stop at just one. She then reached into her ever so stylish purse and forked over another cool $1.75 million for a penthouse at 61 W. 9th Street in West Village. However, if space were the reason for the purchase, Susie-Q made a big mistake.

The new penthouse is tiny but posh but has a terrace that wraps around on three sides with a dynamite view of the city. The entrances to the terrace from this smallish slightly over 800 square foot apartment are off the main living area and the bedroom. The terrace is as large, if not larger than the house, so it’s obvious, that would explain the hefty price tag.

While the view is magnificent from the terrace, coming from an area very close to the penthouse, I’m wagering that Ms. Sarandon will have one of those, “What the heck was I thinking?” moments when the winter winds blow and the temperature drops below zero. Let’s hope there’s no sleepwalking when the winter fills the terrace with snow up to her armpits and icicles dangle from the roof. But lets face it, she’ll probably be on a sitting pretty on a white sand beach during the winter months.

The living room/dining room area is large and yet has a cozy appearance due to the wood burning fireplace. It’s elegant and richly decorated with a style that smacks of old money. The wrap around kitchen has beautiful crafted cabinets and appliances on both sides of the wrap around so there’s not an inch of wasted space.

The bathroom is above average but nothing you wouldn’t find in a well maintained mid to upscale American home in an older neighborhood. While the tiled floor and tub seem reminiscent of the 1950′s the clear glass shower stall is 100 percent modern. Did Sarandon pay too much for this tiny abode? Perhaps during the winter months it will seem that way, but when spring and summer hit, she’ll be the envy of everyone in New York.

Alec Baldwin Buys New York City Penthouse

[one_fourth]Bedrooms: 4[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Bathrooms: 4[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Size: 4,137 sq ft[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth_last]Price: $11,700,000[/one_fourth_last]

[box] Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock, with his resurgence in fame has made some dramatic changes in his life. He’s slimmer, happier and has a new home in the big city. A fabulous New York City penthouse, nonetheless.[/box]

Many people attribute Baldwin’s refined appearance and newly purchased abode to his relationship with 26-year-old girlfriend, Hilaria Thomas. (Is Hilaria short for Hilarious?) His old penthouse, which was much smaller, is now on the market for $9.5 million.

Penthouse 12E at the Devonshire house is breathtaking, as it should be for the original asking price of $12.5 million. It’s smack dab in the middle of Greenwich Village and the late architect Emery Roth gets credit for its fabulous design. It offers 4,137 square feet of living area with 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths. This sumptuously decorated two level penthouse has one floor devoted to a great room and a bathroom, with the bedrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room and breakfast nook all on the other floor.

The decor is a contemporary modern design with clean white in the kitchen and the baths, accented by wood and a splash of color. There’s a soaking tub and a separate glass enclosed shower in the master bedroom’s bathroom. In addition, the bedroom sports a study and a dressing area filled with an excess amount of closet space.

The dining room has steel blue walls with white trim and a deep toned hardwood floor. It’s not exactly a warm and inviting room, but nonetheless stunning as it looks like it could be a room in one of New York’s finer restaurants. It does have a manly debonair appearance like the rest of the house and the decor. However, it’s a bit ‘cold’ looking too and aloof.

A much lighter tone of steel blue was the color of choice for another bedroom. Again the hardwood floors and white trim set off the much more soothing and friendlier tones of this spacious room. All the rooms in this penthouse are striking and memorable but again, a bit standoffish and cold. With that said the penthouse is elegant, tasteful and well worth the price Mr. Baldwin paid.

Jennifer Lopez Buys Hamptons Real Estate

[one_fourth]Bedrooms: 7[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Bathrooms: 9[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth]Size: 14,000 sq ft[/one_fourth]

[one_fourth_last]Price: $17,995,000[/one_fourth_last]

[box] After the much-publicized separation of Jennifer Lopez and her hubby Marc Anthony, the final confirmation they’ll be no second thought reconciliation came when she bought a home 3,000 miles away from him, in the Hamptons.[/box]

The house was a steal, by high dollar standards, at just under $18 million. It initially went on the market for $19,500,000 two years ago. The sprawling 14,000 square foot home came from the mind of the brilliant designer/architect, John Laffey and constructed by Richard Perillo of East End Builders. It has sprawling 14,000 square feet of living space with seven bedrooms and nine and a half baths. Plus there’s an elevator for those who don’t wish to take the stairs.

The palatial estate sprawls over two acres on Long Island in the quaint town of Water Mill. It includes such amenities as limestone floors, Venetian plastered walls and even a tub completely carved out of a block of marble. The luxury property has a view of Mecox Bay and
one feature of the entry way is a spiral staircase going up a two-story rotunda.

The fully shingled house has hardwood floors throughout and plain white walls, but that doesn’t stop it from looking spectacular. It has a living room surrounded by glass doors and large expansive windows leaving only the framework between you and the outdoors. It also includes a large fireplace and a coffered ceiling in one of the premier living spaces. The coffered ceilings in this area are not disturbing (unlike the one featured in Jonah Hill’s kitchen); in fact, due to the expanse of the room, and geometric design, they fit perfectly.

The kitchen is all white, save the flooring and stainless steel stoves and hoods. (Yes, there are two of them.) All of the cupboards have a Shaker look but instead of the natural wood, they are white. However, you’ll find the gold standard of luxury in the master bathroom, where you have a hand carved marble bathtub, reminiscent of the old claw tubs, but without the claws of course.

Outside there’s a spa that offers a fireplace with a gigantic chimney. Atop the front of the chimney there’s a wide screen TV for the viewing pleasures of those in the spa. These are just a few of the amenities of Jennifer Lopez’s newly purchased home. It is impressive and breathtaking but…well, $18,000,000? That’s a big number for you and I, but probably chump change for our girl.
